Qualcomm, a leader in global wireless broadband internet, has begun developing a wireless broadband spectrum in India in the last year. The company CEO noted in a recent interview that the spectrum development plans are on track, but he has not yet disclosed what the intended purpose of the development is. He did say that he believes India will be a world leader in the global mobile internet boom going forward.

The company's acquisition of broadband wireless spectrum in India was quite large, and they are currently engaged in network trials to demonstrate their ability to operate both LTE and 3G services. Qualcomm is following a deliberate multi mode strategy in order to provide coverage for mobile devices in every part of the country. They continue to partner with Indian companies to develop the spectrum and forecast the launch of a commercial network by early next year.

Shaw Communications, a large Canadian telecom, has recently abandoned a $1 billion strategy to move into the mobile phone business and instead opted to spend less and focus on providing wireless broadband internet access that customers can plug into the company's broadband network.

The company started down this path after acquiring $190 million in wireless licenses in 2008, but the executive team decided against building out a full cellular network due to the high level of competition in that market. This reversal of course came as quite a shock because it basically throws away three years of planning and preparation to enter the cellular market on the part of the previous CEO, Jim Shaw. He resigned as CEO last year and handed the reins to his younger brother Brad Shaw.
